Public School vs Home School

A nearby school district recently voted to allow home schooled students to play on public school sports teams. This has caused quite a divide between parents in the district. Personally I think that they are wrong to allow them to play. First and foremost, you can't pick and choose what elements of the public school system you want to participate in. When the parents decided they wanted to home school their kids that was their decision and part of that decision is knowing that they will not have access to public school events. What's next? Are we going to allow them to go to Prom or be in the NHS? That's ridiculous. If they want their children involved in sports there are other ways to do this. Many cities in the area have a park district that offers sports. Are they going to want their kids to be allowed to play in band and sing in the choir? Where does it stop? These activities are for the students that go to the public school. Second, when you are involved in sports in school you have to keep up certain grades to be able to participate. You also have to have a certain code of conduct, for example, if you are suspended you can't play. How are the sports teams in the public school going to verify this with the home schooled kids? It doesn't seem fair that these rules would not apply to them as well. The argument coming out of the home school camp is that they pay taxes into the school district whether they want to or not and their taxes pay for these sports so their kids should be allowed to play. Well, you know what, so do the elderly and the people who have no children. They all pay taxes (if you own a home). Who cares? What does that have to do with anything? What about all the students that go to the public school but don't make the team or choose not to play? Their parents are paying taxes but they aren't involved. That argument just seems ridiculous.
